“Here now, what’s happening? You’ve gone all green around the edges, pretty boy!”

I frown. It’s difficult enough maintaining the trancelike serenity necessary to keep most of my consciousness in the Otherway, not to mention sustaining the connection spell with Farryn’s mind. Doing so while an intrusive old witch prods at my shoulder with a long knobby finger is almost more than I can manage.

I grimace and partially open one eye to meet Mother Ulla’s disconcerting stare. “It’s him. It’s the fae—Yhendorn. He’s there with her.”

“Yeah? Well, what’d you expect?” Ulla folds her arms and sucks on a tooth. “It’s his dream, after all.”

I shut my eye again, grinding my teeth as I sink my focus back into that other space. I feel along the connection, searching for Farryn. I can’t really see the dream in which she stands, neither can I hear what she says or what is said to her. Not exactly. But I feel it all in her head with a clarity that is unsettling to say the least. I feel her flush at the sight of that tall fae lord. Feel her shock, her fear, and . . . and her admiration. Yhendorn is very beautiful, after all. Beautiful and powerful and . . .

“Don’t you worry.”

I grunt and open one eye again at the sound of the ward witch’s voice. Mother Ulla grins gummily and chuckles. “You’ll have to work harder to hide your thoughts if you don’t want them to be read plain as day on your pretty face, boy. I know proper jealousy when I see it. But don’t you worry! Our Farryn’s not a complete fool. She ain’t likely to go fallin’ for a fella who kidnapped her and threatened her life. Just sayin’. She may be a lazy-boned featherhead, but even she’s not that dim.” The old woman leans in a little closer and pinches my cheek. “Don’t tell her I said so. I don’t want her thinking I credit her with any sense!”

I pull back from the witch’s fingers and firmly shut my eyes again, pouring my consciousness into the connection. I can almost, in a sense, see the golden forest and the powerful being standing before Farryn. I can certainly feel her quickened heartbeat.

“Steady, Farryn,” I whisper along the spell-thread. “Steady.”
